The police today sealed off the A2 Belfast to Bangor Road causing traffic chaos throughout East Belfast and North Down.

The chaos was caused by what the police described as an 'incident' and for most of the day, local news bulletins omitted the story and made no reference to the nature of the emergency.

Many commuters were stuck for hours in bumper to bumper traffic whilst the police dealt with 'a woman in distress' at the Holywood Exchange flyover.

The police later indicated that the woman has been taken to hospital and the road has now been re-opened in both directions.
